Founded in 2009, Creative Strategies is a full-service, boutique public relations firm that uses an independent model, enabling clients to receive full-service, expert communications advice and services at a fair price point. Creative Strategies teams with other experienced independent consultants as necessary to provide on target and expert results. Team members are veteran public relations professionals with deep public relations experience.

Meet Our Principal

Shawn Flaherty, President

Shawn founded Creative Strategies to help nonprofits and businesses incorporate creative and cost-effective communications strategies to propel their issues, raise their visibility and strengthen their brands. Shawn and her team have worked with a variety of companies and nonprofits, developing, and implementing successful communications plans and strategies.  Her award-winning client work has touched national and local issues, including housing, real estate, science, child welfare, homelessness, public policy, cybersecurity, health, logistics, and financial services.

Before starting the firm, she directed Freddie Mac’s comprehensive and multi-faceted public relations activities for its affordable housing products, corporate citizenship efforts, minority outreach activities, corporate governance practices, workplace issues, and the Freddie Mac Foundation. Prior to Freddie Mac, Shawn served as a public relations officer for the US Travel Association, where she revamped and grew its public relations program.

Active in the community, she is on the board of nonprofit SPARC, a member of PRSA, a former board member of Stop Child Abuse Now, former chair of the Independent Public Relations Alliance, and a graduate and former board member of Leadership Loudoun. Shawn has a degree in Communications from the University of Virginia.
